May 23, 2010 - The church is springing forth!

Elder Wall ran into some computer difficulties last week and wasn't able to e-mail us, so here is his latest message to us.

Well this week was an awesome week. I loved it! Honestly last week was a little slow and we struggled a bit to stay busy. But me and Elder Farley kept at it, worked hard, and had a great week. By far the highlight of the week was church yesterday. It was by far the best church we have had since I have been here. Everything went picture perfect and we had great lessons and talks. One of our investigators wanted to go church but was shy and didn't know anyone. So our new Relief Society went and visited her and like it always does when people do their visiting, it worked and she came to church. It was great. Also she is an older lady and very respected in the community so a lot of other people have been asking us about the church and trying to find out what it is that made this woman leave the methodist church and go to church with us. It has been good.

We had really good priesthood and sunday school classes with lots of questions. The members are all recent converts and are all studying hard and trying to learn the gospel. So they have lots of great questions. It keeps me on my toes. But all the classes were awesome with great discussions and learning. It is so cool to see their knowledge and testimony of the gospel growing! The Lord truly is preparing them to be the foundation for the church in the future here in Kadavu.

Bro Seru gave a talk in sacrament that was amazing. It was his first time ever speaking in public in his 59 years of life. He was very nervous but prepared well and gave one of the best talks on the restoration of the gospel and Joseph Smiths calling as a prophet. I was so impressed with his level of understanding and how he really "got" the message of the gospel. He ended with describing what a great blessing the knowledge of the restoration is and how it has changed his life as well as all of ours and how now it is our responsibility to share this happiness and blessing with others. I was so proud of him. It has been amazing to see him and his family's amazing progression and the change that they have had as a family and as individuals. It was like a pay day for me yesterday to see some of the fruits of our hard work.

Also, the Relief Society has taken it upon themselves to clean and put fresh flowers in the church building to prepare for Sunday; it made all the difference. It looked so nice and invited the spirit to be strongly with us. We also got a locking book cabinet to put all our hymnbooks and manuals in instead of piling them in the corner, and it looks so great. It has been cool to see our little wooden one room shack turn into a church building with a pulpit, white board, chairs, sacrament table, and now book cabinet. I still remember my first Sunday when it was an empty room and we all sat on the floor. I am so grateful to be a part of the progression and establishment of the church in Kadavu. We also had some good things happen with Rogo and Lasarusa who have wanted to be baptized but were preachers for the Methodist church. They went this week and resigned from the methodist church and are now ready to move forward with joining and becoming strong members in our happy little unit. I am excited for them.

I am loving my new companion! He is great and we are having a really good time and working hard. That is what it is all about. All is well and I hope the same for you. Love you all.

Love,
Elder Wall

PS. Six months from today I will be getting on a plane. Where has all the time gone? I gotta use these last precious six months wisely, my time is running out.

March 9, 2010 - A Phone Call from Paradise and a New E-mail

Last Sunday we had the marvelous opportunity to talk with Jake for Mother's Day. One of the many blessings of modern technology and his particular mission, is the ability to talk to him on Skypes; we were able to not only speak with him, but to see his little home and a gorgeous view of the ocean from his porch. A generous member in his area lent his laptop to the missionaries for the occasion, so Jake took it inside and showed us around.

He is currently living in a small hut with a tin-looking roof that I can imagine creates quite the symphony of sounds during hurricanes. There is a gap between the roof and the top of his wall where all sorts of cool creatures (rats, lizards, spiders, etc..) come in through; in fact, as he was speaking to us, a giant gecko was hanging out on his wall. He sleeps on a sleeping pad surrounded by a mosquito net. We asked him if the rats chew holes in it and he simply responded with his solution: all you have to do is tuck the chewed up holes under the mattress and it's good as new.

We were surprised to see that he has a fridge. It doesn't actually keep the food cold since they do not have reliable electricity, instead it serves as a lock box- it's what they use to protect their food from hungry rats. He also told us about some of the things he has eaten: pig brains, lamb neck, turtle, fish brains and eye balls, etc...

While the rest of us were filled with overwhelming gratitude to be living in the blessed state of Zion, we enjoyed hearing about Jake's love for the people in Kadavu and the lifestyle. He loves his mission and is completely on fire out there. He told us many inspiring stories about the people he has met and the experiences he has been able to witness with them.

He also told us that there are many different dialects in Fiji. He is speaking a different dialect on Kadavu than is spoken on the main Island. When he talks about Elder Farley learning to speak in his e-mail, he is referring to the fact that Elder Farley doesn't quite know the main Fijian dialect yet and now has to learn the Kadavu dialect since no one speaks English in the area.

In short, it was a great conversation! We loved hearing about the great people of Fiji and about their pioneer stories of starting the church and learning about the restored gospel. And with that, here is his e-mail:

Well it was so so nice to talk to you all. I love you so much. I decided that I would give the usual weekly update. I don't think I told you about everything that happened this week. It was a great week though and I had a great time being with Elder Matheson. He is a great elder and I have learned a lot from being with him this past week. Elder Farley will be flying in tomorrow and I have heard great things about him, so it should be really fun and I am excited. He is pretty green still- only been in Fiji for two months. So that might make for a couple challenges, but I hear he is really quick at learning the language and studies very hard. So it should be good and he will pick it up quick.

This past week though, one thing happened that I was very happy about: our branch service project. We went to the Hospital and chopped down overgrown tree limbs and cleaned up some weeds and piled it all up and burned it. We got a lot of work done and had a good time as a branch. Unfortunately the wind blew all the smoke from the fire right into the hospital..but it is Fiji so no one cared too much. It was a good time though. The entire branch came out and we had a good time bonding as as we served and showed the community that we care. It was a huge success!

We also had a great lesson with Lasarusa, the talatala (a methodist minister) who we have been teaching. He told us he has fasted and prayed and knows that it is God's will for him to be baptized. So when his wife returns from Nadi in a couple weeks, we will set a baptismal date. I am so excited for them- now if we could only find them a reliable consistent transport...

Lasarusa is also the chief of his village so he is a respected member of the community. We are hoping that will open the hearts of some new potential investigators. He and his wife Rogo are an awesome couple and will be a great asset to the branch. They have an amazing relationship and are the epitome of how a husband and wife should be. I love them.

We also started teaching a women we have talked to a lot but who had not yet agreed to take lessons. We started teaching her and it has gone awesome! We have seen her almost everyday this week. On Friday, she told us that she lives in the school-owned house on school-owned land and because of that, they are forced to go to the Methodist church, but that if not, she would be baptized. I was very discouraged because we have had that problem a few times now. I was about to sadly give up and say, "I guess its not their time yet." Then I learned a valuable lesson.

Elder Matheson told them to continue to pray and read the Book of Mormon and to fear God more then man and not to let things like that interfere with whether or not they will accept Christ's teachings. She then said that she, Luvu and her husband Peni, will pray and fast and if it is the Lord's will, then they will do what it takes to obey the answer they receive. I am so excited for them! They are a great couple.

I also got to conduct a few more interviews trying to establish a Relief Society, Priesthood, and Primary program. It was wonderful! The families and members we have here are so faithful and willing to learn and grow and help out! I really enjoyed getting to sit and meet one on one with these wonderful members and notice the huge change that is wrought upon them as individuals and families. It is so great to see their progress and watch their testimonies grow! They still have a lot to learn and do before they will be where we would like them to be, but that is definitely not from a lack of faith and willingness. They are such great people and they are doing such an awesome job of continuing after baptism to progress and move forward. They are really taking the gospel and running with it.

The primary returned from their trip to Suva. They loved it and were on such a spiritual high upon returning! They loved the temple and church in the big wards and with all the people and meeting all the members and going to see the LDS secondary and primary school. For a lot of them, it was their first time leaving Kadavu. Not only that, but their first time leaving the small two village area they live in. It was so good for them to get out and see some more of the world, more then the tiny little village they live in.

Church was really good. I prepared a lesson for Sunday School and ended up covering only slightly what I prepared because there was so much discussion and so many questions. But those are my favorite kinds of lessons, so it was great.

All is well in Kadavu and I love it here. The island, the people, the work, I love it all. I love you all too. Thanks for the wonderful opportunity to talk and hope you all have a great next week, until then Moce.

May 2, 2010: The Blessings of Obedience

Well this week was a great week(except the long miserable boat ride). Zone Conference was incredible- such a strong spirit and so motivating, as well as interviews with President Ostler! It was actually quite a humbling experience. It seems like they are always talking about exactly what I need to improve on. I am really excited to go back at it and have a great next six weeks applying what we learned. One thing I really liked about what President Ostler said was that with missionaries he notices that attitude and behavior make all the difference. So I am really going to be trying to have a better outlook and attitude. We also talked a lot about charity and how important it is love everyone and show our heavenly father our love for him through loving his children. By this shall men know ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another.

Elder Finch got an ingrown toenail that got infected and really swollen, so we went to the hospital and they said that he cannot go back to Kadavu until it is better. So one of the AP’s Elder Matheson came back to Kadavu with me and Elder Finch is in Suva till we figure out what else to do. He goes home on the tenth, so I don’t think he will be coming back to Kadavu. We are not sure what I am going to do for a companion because Elder Matheson has to get back pretty soon to do AP things. I guess we will see what happens.

The work is going well. Church was really really good yesterday. We had good attendance and a great meeting with great spirit. I was really happy with it and all the members really enjoyed it as well. Two members from Utah were there and really helped to bear testimony and help the members know that even though in Kadavu the church is really new and there is not many members, that we are a worldwide church with millions of faithful members. Also our primary was sponsored by a member from Utah to take a temple trip to Suva and see the temple. We have heard they have had lots of fun and it has been a great experience for them.

We did interviews this week for callings within the branch and it was something that I was really nervous for- just some young kid coming in and interviewing grown men who are married with children, but it went so well. I loved it. It was really nice to get to sit down and talk with these wonderful members about how they are doing. They are so strong and faithful. We will be doing more this week and I am very excited. I think the callings are really going to help these wonderful members and help to grow our branch. They are all definitely ready and excited to progress the work here.

One really good story from this week: last week I talked about how the Seru family made the sacrifice and payed their tithing. Well the Lord kept his promised and opened up the windows of heaven and poured out a blessing upon them. On Tuesday morning, Bro Seru was going to go out fishing and while he was walking out, he saw a pool of water that was trapped up on the land when the tide went out. He walked over and looked inside and a HUGE fish was swimming trapped inside this tide pool. So he ran home and grabbed a spear, came back, and speared this huge fish that was trapped inside. It was a 19 Kg traveli, a really valuable fish. So he took it and sold it for 80$; that is over a couple months wages for this wonderful family. I was so happy to see the blessing poured out upon them as they kept the commandments. I am also really excited to follow up teaching them and helping them recognize the blessings they are receiving from following the commandments and how many more blessings await them.

Well I had an incredible week and look forward to more to come.

Love,
Elder Wall

P.S. I have spent my whole mission wishing I could play rugby barefoot and run and plant on the asphalt like nothing, like the Fijian boys do…well this week in Suva, we woke up early to go play rugby for morning exercise and I played with no shoes. I did really good and played well, still not Fijian but I'm getting there.

March 25, 2010: McDonald's here I come!

Well, what a week! It was very busy and it seems like we only finished half of what we needed to, but we still got so much done so I guess it is good. We get to make my favorite boat ride back to Suva this week for zone conference. I am ready for a break from the small island and excited to eat some McDonalds and pizza again. It will be good.

On May 10, Elder Finch will be leaving and I will get a new companion. I am not sure who it is but I hope he comes ready to work hard and have a great time doing it. Well this week on Sunday, we had pouring hard rain so unfortunately only two families made the walk out to church. We only had 15 people there, but it was still a good church. About half way through sacrament, the rain started pounding so hard on the tin roof that the speaker was yelling and you still couldn't hear anything so we ended a bit early. I am sure the talks were great though.

One really good story we had: the Seru family who we just baptized, asked us a question about tithing and paying tithing so we had a really good lesson. Then on Sunday, Poasa their oldest son, came running to me and said, "Elder, Elder, we brought the tithing- two dollars".

I laughed but I was so proud to see this very very modest family making the sacrifice to pay their tithing. I know the Lord will bless them for their obediance. It truly is a modern day story of the widow's mite. Two dollars Fijian is not quite one dollar American, but to this family it is a definite sacrifice. They are growing and progressing so well. Simply the fact that they walked farther than most Americans have ever walked in their lives in pouring rain through the jungle with four young kids and a small baby just to attend church, is really such a strong testimony of their faith. I love that family so much.

Other good things that happened this week: Lasarusa, a preacher for the Methodist church and his wife, told us they want to be baptized. However they can't really give up the paycheck from the Methodist church (it is their only source of income) so they said they would just come to our church every week and that he doesnt have to preach. I, being somewhat frustrated by the fact that they didn't really get it, talked really really straight to them and told them to join this church and that they must forsake all and follow the Savior and that he would have to leave the Methodist church and his paycheck. I was kind of worried about how they would take it. The following day, we heard that the head preacher (his boss), confronted him about always meeting with us and he got very upset and said that we were great people and that he was going to join our church. So hopefully we can work out transportation issues and find them some boat they can get to church every sunday on. They are such a great couple.

I got a boil on the bottom of my foot and by Saturday evening, I was sick of being a tough guy and walking on it so we went back to the flat and I squoze puss out of it all night. It's empty and I'm good to go now, so all is well. I will be eating good food again by Wednesday night when the boat reaches Suva. I am so excited! Love you all-- thanks for all you do.

Love,
Elder Wall

March 18, 2010: Bi-Lingual Conference Time

Well this week was another great week. We finally got our conference disks to watch. However only two of them ended up working; we are not sure what happened. We had priesthood session in Fijian and Sunday pm in English. It was really good. But the one in Fijian was hard to follow. The translators were very monotone and plus, English and Fijian don't translate too well. If I paid attention really close, I knew what they were trying to say. But my attention span is not two hours long, so I was relieved to get the second one in English. I hope we can get all the copies in English and Fijian and we can watch them all sometime. But we had incredible attendance. Our record high, 33 people came out. So hopefully we can keep the attendance that high.

If we can, we're going to have to get more chairs and a bigger building; we only have 30 chairs. One woman, Rogo who we have been teaching for a long time and is a very great lady, has informed us that she wants to be baptized. She lives on the Tavuki side and we have a hard time finding transportation for them to come to church, so that is a difficult challenge we are praying to find a solution for. Her husband is also a preacher for the Methodist church and that too provides an interesting challenge. But she has great faith and her testimony is getting stronger and stronger so in due time, the Lord will solve her problems.

All of our little unit though is amazing. We have such a spirit of unity and love within the unit and our members ...it is amazing. I know that the work here is only going to progress because of this great unity and love that they have. It is so great to see them learning and growing and progressing. They help each other out and little bit by little bit, they are becoming a strong strong band of saints in the Lord's kingdom on earth. I am so proud of them and the progress I have seen. It is so rewarding to see that.

Well all is well here and I love Kadavu and the wonderful people so much. I love and miss you all. Talk to you on mothers day.
